There is a particular kind of freedom that exists just beneath the surface!
Bliss Beneath the Surface is an original 36" x 36" oil painting of a woman swimming beneath the surface of clear blue water. Suspended between swimming and floating, she appears completely at ease, arms outstretched as she moves through the water in a moment of quiet freedom.
I loved exploring the layers of this underwater world: the movement of the water's surface, shifting reflections, distorted light, and the gradual change from luminous turquoise to deep blue beneath the swimmer. Painted in water-soluble oil paint, this original artwork allowed me to explore the texture, colour, depth and movement that make water so endlessly fascinating to paint. I also spent a lot of time reliving my own favorite snorkeling experiences!
Part of my ongoing series of paintings exploring women in and around the water, Bliss Beneath the Surface is both a contemporary figurative painting and an immersive celebration of the relationship between women, water, and freedom.
